Kautuki.

A tutoring marketplace with live online classes for Class 6–12 students, built first for families in India's Tier 2, 3 and 4 towns. Parents pay per class.

Kautuki website, home page

Kautuki’s tagline sets out the idea: “Your child is not behind. They were only further from a teacher.” Classes are taught live on the family’s phone by a teacher the Kautuki team has checked.

The problem

A family’s choice of teacher is limited to what’s nearby, and the usual options have problems:

  • Coaching classes want a year’s fee upfront, plus the auto fare every day (Kautuki’s site puts that at about ₹960 a month).
  • Tutors who arrive through WhatsApp or an agency are unchecked.
  • In batches of 200, doubts never get asked.
  • Once the class ends, the learning stops too.

The product

How it works

  • Four class formats

A one-to-one class of 60 minutes, a small batch of up to 12 students, a 30-minute doubt session and a 2-hour session before an exam.

  • First class free

The first class with any teacher is free, and a family can try more than one teacher before choosing.

  • Pay per class

After that, families pay for each class separately, with no package, subscription or deposit. Teachers set their own rates, typically ₹100–500 for a one-to-one hour, and are paid only after the class has happened.

  • Built for weak networks

Video adjusts to the signal. When the signal gets too weak, the class carries on with audio and the shared whiteboard instead of dropping.

  • Included with every class

Every class comes with the whiteboard and session notes, and parents get a weekly progress report.

  • Free self-study library

Video lessons, chapter notes, quizzes that mark themselves and assignments a teacher marks by hand. Students also get a personal notebook, links to the free NCERT textbooks and a way to ask a doubt without booking.

Trust and safety

Checks on teachers, recordings for parents

  • Three checks per teacher

Aadhaar identity, qualification papers and a background check, each reviewed by a person on the Kautuki team. Failing any one of them ends the application.

  • Every class recorded

Every class is recorded, and parents can watch any of them back.

  • Data kept in Mumbai

Data is stored in Mumbai and handled under the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act 2023.

Three audiences

Who it is for

  • Families

The main audience. Parents choose the teacher and the class format.

  • Teachers

Teachers keep 80–90% of what they charge, and the share rises with their rating. They are paid out in about 24 hours, set their own hours and pay nothing to join.

  • Schools

Planned for after the launch for students. Schools will be able to cover a missing subject teacher with live batches, list their own staff, and get attendance, parent reports and one GST invoice a month in one place.
